  1. HOW FAST IS THE 386 VERSION?
  2. In the following chart we compare decompression times of various JPEG
  3. images with WinJPEG, Jview, and ColorView for Windows.  The elapsed
  4. times are measured between pressing the OK button in the file selection
  5. dialog and the completion of the display of the image.

  35. With all 4 programs, the JPEGs were decompressed with 2-pass
  36. quantization and Floyd-Steinberg dithering.  WinJPEG and ColorView were
  37. configured to use available memory instead of temporary files.

  39. These timings were performed on the following system: 
  40.   - 386-40 MHz with 64k cache
  41.   - 16 Mb of RAM, (1 Mb set aside for hard disk cache)
  42.   - Maxtor LXT-200 SCSI-1 drive
  43.   - WD7000FASST SCSI controller
  44.   - Windows 3.1 in 640x480x256 display mode
  45.   - Diamond SpeedStar Plus SVGA card
  46.  
  47. No other programs except Program Manager were running at the same time
  48. as each of the above programs.  In addition, the disk cache was cleared
  49. between decompression of each set of pictures to obtain more accurate
  50. timings.
